Notes from CEO, Dale Fowkes
Pets
I’m a proud pet owner and my wife and I have a couple of wonderful dogs and a couple of cats. Of course, we love our animals, so I’m not surprised at how often we get calls here from customers asking if they can give our supplement products that work so great for them to the family pet. Sometimes the answer is yes, and other times the answer is no. It all depends on the type and size of the pet, the type of supplement, and any other extenuating circumstances like if the pet is on medication. Different types of pets have different needs. What might be good for a cat might not be beneficial for a dog. And vice versa. As you probably know, we often tell our customers to consult with their doctor before taking a particular nutritional supplement. I think the same thing goes for pets. Before starting your dog or cat on a supplement regime, please do check with your veterinarian. Having said all this, I’d like to share a personal story about pet supplementation. Jake was a cat we had some years back. Jake started having difficulty walking, had poor balance, and his hind legs appeared to be in pain. At that time in our life we could not afford the several hundreds of dollars for medication the vet recommended. After consulting with a few of my friends, I put together a formula for Jake that included aspirin, vitamin E, coenzyme Q-10, and vitamin B-6, amongst other things. After two weeks Jake was fine, fending off all the other neighborhood cats, and he lived several more healthy years. Our dog Marta was similar … her weak and painful hind legs got so bad we had to assist her in exiting the house when nature called. I gave her Joint Freedom™, and Omega Advantage™, and she was soon back to her young self, and I think this added a couple of years to her active life. So you see, pets and supplements do mix. If you love your pets like we love ours, please do consider providing them with quality supplements. Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO
Quality
I would like to take a moment to discuss quality. A lot of companies in the nutrition industry talk about quality, and for the most part the industry produces safe products. But for me, quality products are so much more than just being safe, they need to be effective also. Let’s start with ingredients. As with anything, when it comes to ingredients, you get what you pay for. Here at Health Freedom Nutrition, our products are our business so our product development team uses only the very best components in our dietary supplements. Their selection criteria for ingredients include, but are not limited to, potency, efficacy, purity, source, etc. The actual cost of the ingredient is the last thing on their list if it even comes up at all. Then, after we’ve found the right ingredient, it needs to be combined with other ingredients in the correct amount. Product formulation is a core competency here at Health Freedom Nutrition and a major contributing factor to our product’s quality and efficacy. Now what about quality in manufacturing? Most companies have quality control departments that inspect for defects or quality issues after the product has already been made. To me, their quality systems are backwards. The manufacturing procedures we employ actually build quality into the product. Every step of our “small batch” production process has a check and balance system designed to eliminate manufacturing errors, ensure product freshness, and catch quality problems before they even show up. True, we also inspect our finished products, but rarely do we find any problems because our systems ensure we build quality in right from the beginning. And finally, what about quality in the distribution process? Our products may be of the highest quality, but if it does not arrive on time; it does you very little good. That’s why our Customer Service Team strives to ensure all the information they gather from you is up-to-date, and what you ordered is indeed what gets entered into our order system. Same goes for the shipping department. They do their very best to verify that the product they ship to you is indeed the one you ordered. So you see, at Health Freedom Nutrition quality is so much more than safe, defect-free merchandise. It’s about producing and providing the very best science-based health and nutrition products for you, our valued customers. Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO When we started Health Freedom Nutrition back in 2000, we put a lot of thought into the name of the company. The term “Health Freedom” has different meanings for different people, but I would like to share with you what “Health Freedom” means to me. First up, without one’s health, freedom is hard to come by. Premature aging can affect ones health and mobility, and that limits ones freedom to do what they used to do. My other point on Health Freedom is that it is all about individual choice. It’s the right of the individual to determine their own course of action when it comes to the health of their body, mind, and spirit. Seems logical enough, right? I believe advocates of Health Freedom are a special breed of people. They are inquisitive, insightful, and intuitive. I’ve found the people who believe in and practice Health Freedom to be some of the most informed and knowledgeable people I know. They also tend to be strong-willed and determined; not the type of folks who are easily intimidated or pushed around. Those are some pretty good character traits, don’t you think? The type of character traits you might look for in a best friend. Someone you can trust and whom you know won’t compromise their principles. It is these same character traits that I wanted Health Freedom Nutrition to reflect. And the fact that Health Freedom advocates are resolute is important. Believe it or not, there are threats to individual Health Freedoms both here in the U.S. and around the world. There are certain entities (and I’m not going to name them here) that sometimes put their own self-interest before that of individual consumers. That’s why I personally support organizations like the National Health Freedom Coalition. Their mission is stated below: “To promote access to all health care information, services, treatments, and products; to promote an understanding of the laws and factors impacting the right to access; and to promote the health of the people of this nation.” That’s a position I completely agree with. I also like the fact that as Americans we still have the Freedom to take such a stance. So you see, there is a little more behind the Health Freedom Nutrition name than you might have suspected. If you would like to learn more about Health Freedom, I would urge you to contact the National Health Freedom Coalition at www.nationalhealthfreedom.org. Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO I have three words for you today; Advanced Nutritional Formulations. That has been Health Freedom Nutrition’s motto since inception. You’ll find it on every bottle we produce and every advertisement we run. But what exactly do these words mean to you, our valued customer? Well, maybe I can answer that by telling you what those words mean to me and why we chose them in the first place. But first, a little background information for you. In the nearly 30 years I’ve been in the nutrition industry, I have seen hundreds of products introduced into the marketplace only to be gone in six months time or less. Most of these products are what I call “me-too” products trying to capitalize on the latest nutrition fad or supplementation trend. I never wanted Health Freedom Nutrition to be a “me-too” company, so from the very beginning I made sure that every product we produced was backed up by solid, credible science. Here’s what I mean. When we started, we had four core products. I’m pleased to say we now offer more than 100 high-quality health and nutrition products, and not once have I ever had to discontinue a product because it was a fad product whose time had come and gone. To be sure, as the body of nutritional knowledge grows, we revisit our product formulations and revise them as necessary. But not one of the products we formulated has ever been discontinued. Our nutritional products are formulated using the most recent and reliable health and nutrition scientific research. That’s what Advanced Nutritional Formulations means to me (and hopefully to you!) and I’m proud to print it on every bottle we produce. Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO The topic for this issue is customer service, a subject near and dear to my heart. I’ve been in the nutritional supplement industry for nearly 30 years now, and I’ve seen some companies that didn’t have a clue what customer service was all about. Years ago, supplementation was not nearly as popular as it is now, and the companies that failed to provide good customer service are the ones that are no longer in business today. Don’t get me wrong. Some of the products these companies produced were good, but their customer service wasn’t. They didn’t seem to understand that nutritional supplements were new to a lot of people and that the customers had questions about the various products. So instead of having knowledgeable people available to answer product questions, they had a handful of “order takers” working the phones who didn’t know anything about the products they were selling. Frustrated by the lack of information, the customers eventually stopped calling and these companies soon went out of business. When we started Health Freedom Nutrition, I told my small team that customer service would be just as important to me as the excellence of our products. In fact, one of the very first people we hired was a nutrition expert whose sole job was to answer customer’s health and nutrition questions. That’s still true today, but now we’ve taken our commitment to customer service even further. For example:
Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO The word of the day here at Health Freedom Nutrition is synergy. In fact, it’s not just the word of the day for today; it’s the word of the day everyday. Synergy comes from the Greek word synergia, meaning joint work and cooperative action. The theory goes that when two or more things combine forces, their effect is greater than the sum of their individual efforts. When I look around the Health Freedom Nutrition complex here in Reno, Nevada, I see synergy everywhere. I see it in our manufacturing areas, where our highly-skilled manufacturing technicians work together to produce our advanced nutritional formulations. I see it in our customer service area, where our knowledgeable customer service representatives work with you to clarify your nutrition needs and guide you toward products that will meet those needs. Most importantly, I see synergy in our products themselves. Many of our product formulations are designed to work synergistically in your body. By that I mean, the formula ingredients are included in just the right amounts so that they work together to achieve the desired result. Here’s a good example... One of our best selling products is Sleep Advantage™ which contains important herbs and nutrients for healthy sleep. Individually, we know these herbs and nutrients act as sleep inducers and relaxants. However, when combined together, they produce a synergistic effect to reduce stress and anxiety, and help you sleep through the night without waking up feeling groggy or lethargic, which is common in sleep medications. That’s synergy! Their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual efforts. And while I mention Sleep Advantage as an example, it is certainly not the only product we produce that utilizes synergy. In fact, when we create our formulations, we take every opportunity to include synergistic ingredients. The goal, of course, is to create enduring, effective formulations. That’s why synergy is the word of the day everyday here at Health Freedom Nutrition. Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO I honestly believe the finest dietary supplements start with the finest ingredients. Let me show you what I mean... When I stroll through the warehouse here at Health Freedom Nutrition, it is like taking a walk around the world. In one corner is a box containing Eurycoma Longifolia from central Malaysia. In another corner is a drum filled with Pygeum from the south coast of Africa. Over there is a natural amino acid from Europe and, a few pallets over, a rare herb from Japan. I think the Earth is a wondrous place and its natural bounty contains everything a human being needs to not only survive, but to thrive. But I also know the Earth is a very big place and its natural bounty is not evenly distributed. That’s why our Product Development Team and our Procurement Department literally scour the globe to find and procure the finest ingredients for the products we make. For example, omega-3 fatty acids, like those in our Omega Advantage™, can be found in plants like pursalane or flaxseed. But the best omega-3 fatty acids are found in cold-water fish like anchovies or mackerel, and the purest omega-3 fatty acids come from fish found in the nutrient-rich, deep water fjords off the coast of Norway. And can you guess where the fish oil we use in Omega Advantage comes from? That’s right, from the deep water fjords off Norway. Of course, that’s just one example of the lengths we will go to ensure that only the finest, effective ingredients are used in the 100+ products we make. I could tell you dozens of other stories, too. Like the time we sent our Product Development Director to southern China to find an elusive herb for one of our cognitive enhancement products. He found it, and that product, Smart Days™ is now available to you, our valued customer. So rest assured, wherever on Earth the finest ingredients may be, we will find them. And only the finest, freshest ingredients will ever be used in our products. Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO I began my career in the dietary supplement industry more than 25 years ago when I went to work for my brother who co-founded a small supplement company. I was just 19 years-old and my brother put me to work in his little factory where I learned how to measure ingredients, manufacture and bottle capsules, and ship the finished products out to customers. At the time, I had no idea that I would one day be the CEO of a supplement company. Back then, I was just a kid helping out my older brother. But looking back on it now, I’m grateful for the business basics that I learned from my brother, and even more importantly, I’m thankful I had the chance to watch first hand how my brother applied the principles of integrity that both he and I learned from our family. Integrity... that is probably the most over used yet under applied concept that I’ve ever seen. So many people, politicians, and companies claim to have it, but so few demonstrate it, live it and live by it. I have to admit that there are some days when I am just a little embarrassed to be a part of the dietary supplement industry. Integrity, you see, seems to be in short supply amongst the people and companies that make up the industry that I have chosen as my life’s work. The supplement industry somehow seems to attract the frauds, the fakers, and the false claim makers. These get-rich-quick schemers know nothing of true integrity. My family taught me that integrity was “doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” That’s simple enough, but the hucksters use the “when no one is watching” part as loophole to not do the right thing. They make up false testimonials from “satisfied customers” and they substitute poor quality, ineffective ingredients while claiming to purchase “only the best.” It’s these people—and their lack of integrity—that tarnish the industry and make it hard for companies with true integrity to compete. Suffice to say... what I learned from my family I apply everyday at Health Freedom Nutrition. I have integrity—and real customer testimonials, and effective ingredients and a money back guarantee that I honor. I just wish, for the sake of the industry and the consumer, that some of these so called competitors could say the same. Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO I really enjoy running a dietary supplement company. It gives me great satisfaction to know that the quality products we make here at Health Freedom Nutrition make a difference in the health and well-being of our customers. But like any job, it’s not always wine and roses. There are days when I wonder why I keep at it—especially since I find so often that our product development philosophy goes against the grain of what most of the other companies are doing. Take vitamin E for example... there are dozens of scientific studies that conclude that gamma tocopherol is a critical component of a vitamin E supplement. Yet, so many supplement companies exclude gamma tocopherol from their vitamin E products, or toss in a cursory, ineffective amount and claim they have “mixed tocopherols.” Here’s another example... and this one falls into the category of “more is not always better.” Resveratrol seems to be one of the hot new products right now. I’ve seen some products on the marketplace containing upwards of 300-400 mg per capsule, which is equivalent to consuming a couple of gallons of wine, so taking more resveratrol than found in a few glasses of red wine is going beyond mere supplementation into experimental dosages that could very well provide more harm than good. And that’s what’s so frustrating for me. From a business standpoint, it’s tough to compete against irresponsible companies who sell inferior formulas or excessive amounts. And from a moral standpoint, it’s difficult to stand by and watch companies use their customers as guinea pigs when they sell them unstudied and sometimes unsafe supplements. Therefore, you see, it’s difficult for me to run a company that goes against the grain. But I will tell you this... I sleep very well at night knowing every formula we make at Health Freedom Nutrition is backed by science, and the ingredients we use are the best and the amounts we include are optimal for human health. And if that’s what going against the grain means, then that’s what I’ll continue to do. Sincerely, Dale Fowkes, CEO |
