9/24/09 - Vitamin K Intakes Need to be Increased to Prevent Disease. A new vitamin K study set to appear in the October 2009 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says current recommendations for vitamin K need to be increased to prevent disease and ensure optimal health. The study, written by researchers from Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute in Oakland, California, says Americans don't get enough vitamin K from food and what little they do get is not enough for all of vitamin K's important health functions. You can read a summary article on the Smart Publications website entitled Vitamin K Deficiency Linked to Osteoporosis, Cancer, and Heart Disease. Harvard University researchers writing in the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal say that Omega-3 deficiency causes 96,000 US deaths per year. The study entitled "The Preventable Causes of Death in the United States: Comparative Risk Assessment of Dietary, Lifestyle, and Metabolic Risk Factors" looked at 2005 data from the US National Health Center for Health Statistics. They determined that there were 72,000-96,000 preventable deaths each year due to omega-3 deficiency. You can read the abstract of the Preventable Causes of Death study on the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal website. The researchers demonstrated that carnosine prevented cloudiness in animal eye lenses. You can read the full Carnosine Cataract Study on the Biochemistry website. In an updated position statement on vitamin D, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends at-risk individuals increase their intake to 1,000 IU of vitamin D, and says those who take vitamin D supplements should be sure to take the natural form, vitamin D3, as opposed to vitamin D2. A study published in the June 2009 edition of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests women who take a multivitamin may have a younger "biological age" than those who don't. The study looked at the length of telomeres (the end portions of chromosomes) and found that women who took multivitamins had longer telomeres. Typically, telomeres are shortened slightly during cell division, and longer telomeres suggest less aging. To learn more about this study, see the Study Overview on the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition website. A study published in the April 2009 edition of Nutrition Research says vitamin K supplementation can reduce the incidence of fracture in postmenopausal women.
