Q: What is unique about Bone Vitals?
A: Bone Vitals is a one-of-a kind bone health formulation that is designed to encourage the natural bone building process. It contains menaquinone-7, the long-chain form of vitamin K2 that has been shown to promote the growth of new bone, protect against bone loss, and reduce the risk of bone fracture.
Q: How come there isn't any calcium in Bone Vitals?
A: Despite what you may have heard, calcium alone is not the answer to bone health. Because of the widespread practice of fortifying foods and beverages with calcium, most people are already consuming plenty of calcium in their daily diet. Bone Vitals is designed to assist your body in properly processing and recycling the calcium you are already consuming. Bone Vitals contains the nutrients and minerals that work with calcium to build strong, new bones. However, if you do require calcium supplementation, please see Bone Vitals + Calcium.
Q: I've seen vitamin K2 sold in milligram amounts, how come the vitamin K2 in Bone Vitals is in microgram amounts?
A: Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is commercially available in two forms, MK-4 and MK-7, which differ in clinically significant ways. MK-4, a short-chain menaquinone, is available as a synthetic compound (menatetrenone), while MK-7, a long chain menaquinone, is a natural menaquinone derived from natto fermentation.
One should be cautious about consuming MK-4, the synthetic form, of vitamin K2. Though it will appear quickly in the blood, it has a half-life of only 1-2 hours. For this reason, high pharmacological doses (typically 45 mg/day divided into multiple doses) are necessary to achieve bone health benefits. However, such frequent doses are problematic for patient compliance and the large dosage provide unnaturally high peaks of the vitamin While long term dietary studies show 45mcg of K2 as MK-7 is safe and effective for providing many health benefits, no such studies exist for taking 1,000 times this amount as the synthetic MK-4
On the other hand, the MK-7 form of vitamin K2 is not only highly bioavailable and bioactive—a mere 45 mcg/day was sufficient to activate osteocalcin in the Rotterdam study—but has a much longer half life of 3 days, which enables the body to build up a buffer that can supply vitamin K2 to all tissues 24 hours a day. At 45 mcg/day (a dose 1,000 times less than that needed for MK-4), natto-derived MK-7 is easier for to use and less likely to interact negatively with blood-thinning medications.
Q: Why are the percent daily values percentages for vitamin K1 and K2 different on the supplement facts panel?
A: The government has set the daily value (the estimated daily need) for vitamin K at 80 mcg based on blood coagulation studies. At the time this was established, the different types and individual functions of vitamin K's could not taken into consideration, because little was known outside of vitamin K's coagulation function. Current science indicates K2 is more bioavailable and functional at less than the RDA, while K1 is needed at higher than RDA levels for optimal bone health.
Who should take Bone Vitals?
A: Anyone who wants to protect their bones, or is concerned about bone health or bone loss, should consider supplementing with Bone Vitals.

Calcium alone won't nourish your bones!
We spent more time formulating Bone Vitals™
than any other supplement we sell!
Some formulas my product development team and I create come together very quickly. The science is there, the quality ingredients are available, and the formula just makes sense.
Others take quite a bit more time, and such is the case with Bone Vitals.
Like a lot of people, I believed that calcium and vitamin D were the two main bone building nutrients. I also knew that the isoflavone daidzein, found in soy, was important to stimulate bone growth.
So years ago, I created and sold a product called Calcium + Daidzein to promote healthy bones. Along with its catchy name, the product also included vitamin D, and at that time, I thought it was a good bone building formula.
But about five years ago, I started seeing some studies that said vitamin K was really the key to protecting existing bones and building new bones. More specifically, vitamin K2 was being mentioned in studies for its ability to improve the bone building process.
Now remember, I still was under the impression that calcium, vitamin D and daidzen were all you needed for healthy bones. There were literally hundreds of studies and dozens of experts saying just that.
And then I started to hear rumblings that calcium supplementation did very little for bone health. As it turns out, most people get plenty of calcium in their diet already, and any additional calcium just passes right through.
Now, with all our formulas we follow the science. When clinical studies prove a nutrient's health properties, that's when we put it in a formula. And as the science changes and evolves, so do our products.
So when more and more studies came out proving that both vitamin K1 and vitamin K2 were critical to the bone building process, I knew we needed to create a new bone building supplement.
So in February 2009, more than seven years after my first bone building formula, we introduced Bone Vitals.
Bone Vitals is a one-of-a kind bone health formulation that is designed to encourage the natural bone building process. It contains vitamin D3, vitamins K1 and K2, as well as other important nutrients vital to bone health.
At that same time, we also introduced Bone Vitals + Calcium for those who do not get enough calcium in their diet.
Today, I am pleased to offer both products of these bone building formulas. It may have taken us a bit longer to get there, but I'm proud to say, by following the science, we eventually did!
